Preventive Maintenance service for your optical inspection tool is like getting your car's oil changed. You don’t have the oil changed because it is broken, you bring it in to maintain your cars well running condition and to prevent costly repairs later. We can usually find problems before they become costly repairs.
Why should you have PM service?
Optical inspection tools have mechanical components that need to be periodically adjusted and lubricated, and optical components that need (*proper) cleaning. Greases lacquer in time and oil dries out making components hard to move. If it takes more force to use the tool, then you could be over stressing the mechanical components, and could incur a costly repair. If optical components are not clean, eyestrain and bad resolution can occur.
PM service from the experts at SVMS, Inc:
SVMS’s factory trained service staff (from 6 to 16 years working on microscopes) has the expertise and the experience to maintain and service your inspection tools. We are not only factory-authorized service for Olympus, we have service staff members that have factory training at Leica as well. We also work on Nikon, American Optical, Mitutoyo, Unitron, Bausch & Lomb, Zeiss, McBain, PPL and many others.
Check and replace lubrication in all mechanical components as needed
Lubricate and/or clean stage bearings and drives
Check stage for proper travel
Inspect focus block for travel, feel, and function
Lubricate and adjust all slides and actuators in optical system
Check and clean optics in head, illuminator, objectives, eyepieces, reticles, and cameras (*improper chemicals and cleaning technique can damage lenses coating*).
Check objectives for parfocality and concentricity
Check objectives for chips on bottom lenses and report condition
Check and center illuminator and condenser apertures and field diaphragms
Check alignment of head assembly
Check and adjust parfocality of eyepieces to camera if any
Clean camera (CCD, Polaroid, or 35mm)
Center illumination with optics
Clean outer surfaces of instrument (dirt, grease, old stickers…)
Report and Tag scope:
You will receive a field report at the completion of the service session.
Within 5 working days you will receive a typed inventory, repair, and service report
SVMS, Inc. keeps a service data base of all instrument work
SVMS, Inc. will place new serialized PM stickers at the completion of the service session.
PM service rates:
PM service rate are determined by a few factors:
Type of tool: stereo/ dissecting streo microscope $65, high power microscopes $95, toolmakers type measuring tools $125 ea, wafer level microscopes are $125.00 ea. (This per-scope rate only applies to PM service contracts that have PM service at least twice yearly.)
Condition of instrument. (If the scopes need excessive work, the charge will be our standard $120 an hour. (Unless a PM service contract for at least twice a year has been made))
Accessories such as CCD/ Polaroid/ or 35mm cameras, media handling devices, and video printers are an extra service charge. Call for specific current rates on accessories.
Travel: Travel is included within 30 miles of our San jose, CA office. Half our service rate per service technician will be added for travel from 30 miles to 100 miles. Call for a quote for over 100 miles.
A calibration is usually preformed after Calibration verification has been preformed and the instrument has been found to be out of spec. Your tool can be out of calibration for a number of reasons:
Liner encoder values need to be reset in the DRO.
Micrometer mounting can be skewed
Bearings can be loose or worn
Stage can be warped or worn
We commonly repair the above problems. After the calibration has been performed, another calibration verification is done and a calibration sticker is affixed to the scope. A calibration report and certificate are generated and sent to the customer.
SVMS, Inc. uses standards which are traceable to NIST. The VLSI calibration standards include chrome on glass for roughness, step height and film thickness calibration and are also available for purchase.
Why use SVMS for your repair needs?
If you have an instrument that is out of warranty or a vintage scope, we can repair it. Many manufactures don’t support “out of production models” and often don’t stock parts any more. SVMS has an extensive inventory of new and used parts and equipment. We also have a vast network of parts dealers we can count on. In some cases we have fabricated replacement parts in our on site machine shop.
SVMS has experience working on many different models and brands*. SVMS works on everything from simple stereo microscopes to multi-axis motorized automated measuring machines with a variety of video equipment. We also are collectors of vintage microscopes and have experience in restoration and repair.
SVMS’s technicians can work on your instruments on site or you can ship the tool to us (we can provide information on proper shipping techniques). Our technicians have traveled nationally and internationally as far as China, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico. We at SVMS work in a variety of environments; we work in semiconductor clean rooms, bio- research facilities, and government nuclear facilities. We will work with class 2 and class 3 Biohazards.
Rates and costs:
SVMS’s repair rates and cost may vary with parts and type of work required. In some cases we can quote you an estimate over the phone (or e-mail). We can also come to your facility and inspect your tool and give a more accurate estimate (time and travel will be charged for an estimate but will be deducted if the repair is done). In some cases it is wise to give us a “not to exceed PO” to cover unforeseen repairs (we will only bill you for the exact amount it took to repair your scope).
Here are some of our repair rates:
Authorized Olympus repair $135 an hour
Mechanical and optical $95 an hour
Electronic $95 an hour
Travel: Travel is included within 30 miles of our San Jose, CA service center. Half our service rate per service technician will be applied for travel from 30 miles to 100 miles. Call for a quote for over 100 miles.

SVMS has a verity of upgrades available, from installing higher resolution liner scales to taking your optics and installing them on a completely different platform (going from a non measuring 4”x 4” stand to a 12”x 12” automated measuring tool).
We can add a variety of optical upgrades:
DIC (differential interference contrast)
EPI (coaxial illumination)
Trinocular head (binocular with an accessory port)
Changing magnification (mag-changers, different objectives, different eyepieces)
Custom optical systems (dual optical or very small VMAs (Video microscope assembly))
Complete optical packages (new or used)
Custom staging in 4’’x 4’’, 6’’x 6’’, 8’’x 8’’, 12’’x 12’’ cross roller bearing stages (motorized or manual motion) and many other configurations and types. AIM also can install, or add, new linear encoders (for X, Y, Z, and R down to a 10th of a micron). We can also motorize any axis, including focus.
SVMS has many video options and enhancements. We can install 35mm, Polaroid, CCD or digital cameras on just about any inspection tool. AIM also can install video capture or Vision X automated measurement software (a full motor and video control tool).
We at SVMS take a different approach to inspection solutions. We don’t take your sample and try to fit it to an inspection tool, we build the inspection tool around your measuring needs.
Please contact SVMS with your inspection needs and an engineer will be glad to discuss options.
SVMS LLC offers classes in proper use of a microscope to individuals or groups. Get the most out of your tool through learning how to set your scope to optimize the image. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org for class rates or for immediate service call 408-373-8140.
